As of this writing, it should always be assumed that every custom elevator T.L. Shield & Associates provides is…is well, custom. It is crafted specifically for the sole location it is intended for.
This is not an attempt at sarcastic humor. It’s just that after a year or so inundated with plans, permits, and whatnot, a homebuilder can forget that the elevator will not be built until the hoistway is one hundred percent finished and signed off by our company. The standard issue 3 feet wide by 4 feet deep car model is often the culprit, sending a signal that this is an “off the shelf” item like a refrigerator that can be nudged around in a space until it looks good.
When you add up 36 inches of interior cab width, cab wall thicknesses, gate pockets and needed safety clearance, you land up with approximately 54 inches of needed finished hoistway width. Secondly, when you add up 48 inches of interior cab length, cab wall thicknesses, and front gate clearance, you land up with approximately 57 inches of needed depth. Some give and take is allowable, but any significant deviation in the shaft might demand that the cab size will have to be changed. We plan for the future, especially in California, as houses can “shift” a bit over the years, and nobody wants to hear an elevator scrape against a wall, right?
Other situations may include a last-minute grievance from a neighbor or the city over the height of the house, which would impact clear overhead of your hoistway, and subsequently, the height of the cab or the door. The homeowner may have a last-second decision on the design of the house, which could run the gamut from style of the gate to even adding a second opening to the hoistway.
We have been there and lifted that. Oftentimes the physical ordering of the elevator is at the point when a project is nearing conclusion, when fatigue is the order of the day and budgets are maxed out. We at T.L. Shield are looking out for the best interest of both the project manager and the customer and any and all riders of the lift. A precise fit means a safe, effective long-term operation of your home elevator.
